Our Story

From Humble Beginnings to aGrowing Community of Learners

The Foundation

Mukhonje Secondary School was established in 2008 as a public mixed secondary school under the sponsorship of the Friends Quaker Church. It began humbly in an ECDE classroom at Mukhonje 'K' Primary School under Head Teacher Mr. Mutende Tom, with the local community volunteering to support and pay the first Board of Management teachers.

Early Leadership

The interim school management committee was led by Mr. Mwalati Kalawanga as Chairperson and Mr. Baridi Festus as Treasurer. The school operated within the primary section until 2012 when part of it relocated to the current site — land that had previously been a public market owned by the defunct Kakamega Municipal Council.

Academic Milestones

The first KCSE class of 17 students sat their exams in 2011 and achieved a mean score of 2.888. In 2010, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) posted the first principal, Mrs. Martha Wanjala, who oversaw the formation of the first Board of Management led by Mr. Kerry Alphonce (2010–2011), followed by Mr. Belengu Richard (2011–2015). From 2016 to 2022, the Board was chaired by Mr. Stephen Mmbasu.

Present Day

After Mrs. Wanjala's retirement in 2022, Mr. Mwalati Jockly served as acting principal until 2023, when the school welcomed its current head, Mrs. Owenga Sophia. The present Board of Management is chaired by Mr. Mayavi Abel, continuing the school's journey of steady growth and academic progress.

From these humble beginnings, Mukhonje Secondary School has grown into a beacon of learning and community spirit, shaping young minds and inspiring excellence for generations to come.
